Using your property as a film location

The hidden benefits

Hosting filming and photo shoots in private houses, flats and other locations, large and small, is becoming a very popular way to supplement income. But are there other hidden benefits to using your property as a film or photo shoot location?

At Fresh Locations, we hear of so many different benefits that people find when using their home as a location. And it’s not only large glamourous houses that benefit as many may think. Our location library has a wide range of properties - like one bedroom flats, cafés, schools and homes that need renovation – and there are hidden benefits in them all.

Our first hidden benefit is for those that are thinking of renovating or sprucing-up their home.

Production companies are contracted to treat your property with care and leave it as they found it. Often, they book your place for a specific feature – a fireplace, wooden floors, a red brick façade. But sometimes, it's just about the size or position of the space.

If that is the case, and with owner permission, the production crew may need to paint, change features or replant the garden to fit the director’s needs – so you might find that your front room has been re-decorated or your garden landscaped for the better.

Our next hidden benefit is for parents whose kids have have flown the nest for university. Often, they want to keep the space for when they visit or come back for the summer break. But when they are not around, using the space as a film or photo shoot location is a great opportunity, and the proceeds could go towards student fees.

Those with beach house locations, holiday homes or people that let property though sites like AirBnB will most likely have downtimes, so they are great for off-season shoots. These types of properties, like Sussex Beach go down well with location scouts, as they are often simply decorated and furnished.

Finally, many academic and business premises are empty for periods of time. Properties like the Hackney Restaurant is free in the day, Workshop is flexibly available, and Dartford Science Lab is free in the school holidays, at weekends and some evenings. All make brilliant film and photo shoot locations.

And, I guess we can’t leave out the undoubtable kudos you get when you share the fact that the latest Hollywood blockbuster was filmed in your kitchen, or that you met Judi Dench last week; but hey, that comes with the territory!

So why not list your property for free with us here at Fresh? There really is nothing to lose, and if your children have left home or you’ve just bought a place that needs renovating, using your property as a location could be a way to get the house of your dreams, while picking up a story or two to tell along the way.
